Headaches in Jersey

Woman with head painThrobbing pain. A dull ache. Sudden pain or “brain freeze” after eating ice cream. Pain on the top of the head. As one of the most common pain conditions experienced worldwide, headaches can range from mildly uncomfortable to debilitating.

Headaches often cause absenteeism from school or work. Those who experience frequent headaches may also find that their mental health is impacted in the form of anxiety or depression.

There are more than 150 types of headaches, which fall into two main categories: primary and secondary headaches.

Chiropractic and Other Approaches to Relieving Headaches

Adjustments may be an effective care option for tension headaches and headaches that start in the neck. Firstly the cause of the headaches must be investigated. If the headaches are linked to a certain lifestyle (poor posture, ergonomic factors, stress or other triggers), these triggers must be addressed alongside the ‘hands-on’ treatment for long-term resolution of the problem.

If the headaches stem from dysfunction within the neuro-musculoskeletal system, we will treat these dysfunctions with various techniques such as spinal manipulation/mobilization and soft tissue manipulation (massage, trigger point therapy, dry needling, etc.).

The combination of techniques depends on each patient and their presenting problem.

A Patient Success Story

Hand on heartMrs C presented to the clinic, having suffered from severe headaches for many years. The headaches had started shortly after a car accident and had been almost constant since. Medication had only temporarily and partially been of help.

After a thorough history and examination, Mrs C was diagnosed to suffer from upper Cervical (neck) joint dysfunction with associated cervicogenic (coming from the neck) headaches. The Diversified Technique was used in combination with trigger point therapy of Mrs C’s upper neck region, together with advice on which stretches should be done at home.

Mrs C came to her second treatment delighted to report that she had already noticed a significant reduction in the intensity of her headaches. After the sixth treatment, she stopped all pain medication; after the eighth treatment, she reported no further headaches.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long until patients typically notice relief?

Patients may notice an instant improvement in their symptoms. However, if the headaches have been present for longer, it may take a few treatments to experience relief from the pain.

Can eliminating certain foods help relieve my headache?

If your headaches (migraines) are linked to food sensitivities, then eliminating certain ‘trigger’ foods may be helpful in reducing your symptoms.
